GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT LONGFORD INTERMEDIATE

CANTEEN/LUNCHES

The school canteen offers a wide range of items, a list of which is sent home on a regular basis. We are proud to have won six recent Heart Beat Awards for promoting healthy food

Pupils are not to leave the school grounds to buy lunches. Leave passes are issued if students go home for lunch

HOMEWORK

The school policy is that all pupils will have homework for four nights of the school week. We ask parents to use the opportunity to take an interest in their child's studies

BUS TRANSPORT

Our students join with Gore High School to travel on several country bus routes. If for any reason pupils are not to catch their bus home, a note to this effect must  be sent to the school

Pupils travelling by bus are subject to school discipline. Persistent misbehaviour will be reported to parents and if such behaviour continues, parents may be asked to arrange alternative transport for their children.

ABSENCES FROM SCHOOL

Contact from home is essential for all absences or lateness, A phone call to the school office before school on the day of absence is required

REPORTING TO THE PARENTS

This school operates a policy of regular and full communication with parents thought he following:
A Meet the teachers evening is held early in the new school year
Sample folders are sent home twice per year
Parents interviews are offered early in Term 1 and thereafter as requested
Written reports are sent home at the end of the year
Informal contact through phone calls. We invite parents to contact us if you wish to discuss the progress of your child
School Newsletters are sent home weekly
Open night – Term 3 for current Year 6 prospective students

DENTAL CLINIC

The School's Dental clinic caters for all pupils and is staffed for part of the school year. The Dental Clinic phone number is (03) 208 7418

RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION

Religious instruction takes form of a short assembly of the whole school for 10 minutes once a week. This is conducted in turn by members of the local clergy
Parents who wish their children to be withdrawn from religious instruction should inform the Principal in writing

SUPPORT SERVICES

Longford Intermediate is host school for one of the Gore District's Resource Teachers of Learning and Behaviour

In addition, our school is supported by such people as the Health Nurse who is available to students on Wednesday at lunchtime, the Youth Aid Officer, the Police Education Officer, advisers from Specialist Education Services, and C.Y.P.S

BEHAVIOUR  GUIDANCE

The school encourages positive behaviour. We provide an environment where pupils can feel secure

IN ADDITION THERE ARE A FEW ITEMS WHICH SHOULD BE NOTED:

Longford School is SMOKE-FREE. Smoking or the possession of cigarettes drugs or alcohol at school or on the way to or from school is forbidden.
Chewing gum is not permitted at school. Sugar (e.g. sweets) is discouraged

Where breakages or loss of school equipment occur due to misuse or disregard of directions, pupils concerned may be expected to contribute towards the cost of repairs or replacement.

USE OF SCHOOL GROUNDS OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS

Members of the community may use the school grounds for the recreational purposes. If granted prior approval by the Board of Trustees

Pupils are permitted to enter the school grounds after the 8.30am bell and must leave by 3.45pm

Pupils are to wear the correct uniform when attending school and are required to wear it tidily, with credit to themselves and the school

Grey regulation socks with green and gold bands

Grey drill shorts are optional for the summer months

GIRLS

Black Watch tartan skirt. Skirt of material available from H&J Smith. Pattern available from the school
White, short sleeved open neck polo with green trim
Green regulation V neck Jersey/vest
Black lace up flat heeled school shoes, no platform soles. White ankle socks, covering ankle
Polar Fleece Jacket
Tern 2 and 3 – green tights as alternative

A plain dark blue long sleeved full length coat or jacket without contrasting colours (for outside wear only) as for Gore High School is encouraged. Hats and scarves may be worn with jacket in winter

PHYSICAL EDUCATION UNIFORM:

GIRLS:

Regulation green rugby knit shorts (longer leg style)
White sports shirt/T-shirt
Sports footwear as required

BOYS:

Gold drill shorts
White sports shirt/T-shirt
Sports footwear as required

IMPORTANT:


All clothing must be clearly named
No jewellery to be worn apart from one pair of plain studs for pierced ears
Plain unobtrusive hair ties only, with long hair tied back at all times
No make-up or nail polish to be worn
Shoes MUST be worn in the Technology and Science rooms
Cell phones are not permitted at school (if required, mobile phones may be left at the School Office).

SCHOOL COSTS

SCHOOL DONATION

A  Tax deductible donation of $50 is sought from each student or $75 per family to contribute to fund operated for visiting groups, school transport etc for which Government funding is insufficient

Our Parent-Teacher Association has regular fundraising ventures e.g. Pizza, James, Honey & Chocolates. The PTA has provided picnic tables, sports gear, and has subsidised bus trips

TECHNOLOGY

A fee for Foods, Fabrics, Metal and Wood is required to cover ingredients and materials. These fees are payable with the stationery fees at he beginning of the year or at the beginning of each term.

Other costs which may be incurred include Year 7 and Year 8 Camps, Ski trips and LEOTC visits – most of these are subsidised through fundraising ventures
